biography

He performed as a principal dancer at the world’s top ballet companies — at the Mariinsky theatre, the Netherlands National ballet, the Royal Ballet of the Great Britain. In 2006 he started his career in choreography. He worked with Russia’s and world’s best theatres: the Covent Garden («Trip trac» to music by Shostakovich in 2010), Mikhaylovsky theatre («Minor sonatas» to music by Scarlatti in 2010), the Bolshoy theatre («Undine» by Henze in 2016), Perm theatre of opera and ballet («Le Baiser de la Fee» by Stravinsky in 2017).

Bright costumes, high-tech décor, movements honed to the smallest detail — artists of the Opera Theater have been preparing for this premiere for over a year. Today is the general run. The new production is a fantasy based on the libretto of the forgotten ballets by Marius Petipa.

The performance turned out brilliant, beyond any expectations. It has three acts; the first is a fully fledged ballet in which meticulous pantomime alternates with dances according to the old scheme. However, the scheme is full of beautiful moves from the time when the Russian Paquita was born, cleared of the subsequent stupidity of the «ballet of achievements»; the pointes in the rounds do not go up to the knee, but to the ankles, the vectors are delicate, the legs are not pulled over the head. And the action is loaded with emphases like the promenade of the soloists with little accurate jumps, dense strides, hands over the dancers’ heads: discreet little things that make the old-time ballet really old.

Not aspiring to meticulously follow all the plot twists and turns of the sad Shakespeare’s tale, having practically departed from using pantomime, letting the dance and plasticity tell the story and express emotions, Samodurov did not sacrifice either the power of feelings, or the play of temperaments and drama. Same as in his other recent works, the choreographer with ingenuity demonstrates that devotion to the St. Petersburg classical school is not an obstacle to updating the language.

Salieri Variations look like a courtesan game, the director and the performers rush into. Samodurov serves the classical moves (.) but turns them inside out; he accelerates them or changes the angle. Even the most experienced performers cannot remain dead serious here. But they find out that ballet is not a part of ‘classical heritage’, but a natural means of communication.
